A New Horizon for Curiosity

The Aberdeen Science Centre traces its roots back to 1988 when it was opened as Satrosphere in the former tram sheds close to the beach front of the city. The centre has provided inspiration for many children growing up in the North East where oil and gas has been its main industry and a source of funding for its new multi-million pound revamp. We were delighted to be appointed as their supplier for exterior and interior signage of the new extended layout alongside a brand new website to showcase the exciting new exhibits.

The Brief

After an initial consultation and site visit, we looked to create a simple, easy to absorb wayfinding system for transitioning between exhibits within the science centre. We wanted to cover all floorspace so that both children and adults were always in sight of a locator sign, wherever they were. An additional system was required for the outdoor car park to guide visitors in safely.

Our Approach

Having provided a rebrand for the centre in 2018, we were well adapted to the standards and clarity of all of their printed material. This continued with the signage using their core Blue & Orange colour theme and Tahoma typeface that was determined as most legible for displaying type to be read by all ages and abilities. A strong colour contrast increased this clarity and use of simple arrows to indicate directions of exhibits and facilities mimicked airport and train station display boards.

A key component of the signage was the use of a locator map positioned in the reception area. This provided visitors with a useful tool to locate areas and help with access for special needs.

Getting Connected

The newly renovated Science Centre has set its sights on the future. Their new facility includes state-of-the art exhibits, a brand-new second floor and corporate facilities to rival any in the North-East. To support this newly modernised offering, the Aberdeen Science Centre website needed to reflect this investment. The previous website lacked interactivity, online purchase options and didn’t show the passion the Science Centre team has for all things STEM.

Our aim was to delivery something eye-catching, easily navigable, fun and above all, effective in the selling of tickets, bookings, and events.

Getting It Right

The site had to address the growing needs of the online community. We delivered everything that ASC asked from effective mobile optimisation, custom integrated taxonomies, applications, and CMS driven elements. The mobile first approach allowed us to deliver an exceptional website experience for an increasingly on the move audience.

Some of the more complex elements required a great deal of custom PHP & jQuery to get the right additional functionality for a very custom build. We are absolutely delighted with the response the website has received from both the public and from staff.
